How much time does an AI tech pack really save after you've checked its assumptions?

Laura Jane Fish, the technical designer behind Fashion Toolbox, put AI Tech Packs through a detailed review using a complex military garment. We didn't know the video was coming. We didn't sponsor or arrange it.

As the founder, I appreciated seeing someone work through the actual document. A screen recording shows us where someone gets stuck, what they expect to happen, and how much checking they're doing along the way.

There was useful feedback on the generated sketch and the way the technical information came together. There were also problems that added work.

Fashion Toolbox published “AI Tech Packs Review: Can AI Create a Production-Ready Tech Pack?” on October 1, 2026. Laura used the free, low-effort generation mode with detailed reference information.

What worked, and what needed attention

Laura highlighted the generated flat sketch, the organization of the technical information, and the time saved getting a first draft together.

She also flagged measurement units, material placements and construction callouts. The generated pack still needed checking against the information she'd supplied before it could be handed to a factory.

You can hear her sketch feedback around 19:44 and her overall assessment from 27:36. It's one test on a demanding garment. The specific issues she raised need to be checked individually.

The difficult part: checking what AI added

The part I keep coming back to is the review work.

When you're building a tech pack manually, you're making decisions and checking details as you go. You know where a measurement came from because you entered it. You know why a material is on the list because you chose it.

With a generated pack, you're looking at a document that's already filled in. Now you have to work out what came from your instructions, what was inferred, and what might have been misunderstood.

Those are different problems. If you didn't specify a detail, AI may fill the gap. If you did specify it and the output gets it wrong, that's an error. Either way, you need to be able to find it.

A document can look complete and still leave you with a lot of checking to do. If you have to hunt through every page to find the additions and compare them with your references, reviewing can become more work than making the pack yourself.

That's the problem we need to make easier. Getting the first draft together quickly is useful. Making it straightforward to check and edit is just as much part of the job.

What Techpack Mama can help you check now

You can already use our built-in Techpack Mama Prompt QC to compare a generated pack with the details you requested.

For generated packs with a stored prompt, you can run a check that compares supported requested details with the current pack. Those include measurements, materials, and artwork sizing, position and color. You can review the findings and ask Mama to prepare suggested edits for incorrect or missing details.

You choose which edits to apply, then save the changes. Prompt QC doesn't replace your technical review or confirm that every assumption is correct. The current generation and QC workflow explains the steps and limits.

We're also working on making assumptions and the details needing attention easier to find. I'll share the specific changes as they become available.

How I'd check whether it saves your team time

Try it on a garment your team knows well, with the references you'd normally use. Count the time spent preparing the inputs, generating the draft, reviewing it and making corrections. Then compare that with your usual process.

During the review, I'd start with these checks:

  • Compare the pack with your original instructions and references. Look for missing requirements, changed details and additions you didn't specify.
  • Check the measurement values and their units together. Make sure the numbers represent the intended dimensions.
  • Check each material and trim against where it's used on the garment.
  • Match construction callouts to the right feature and location.
  • Review any proposed grading against your own sizing requirements.

Keep track of what takes the longest to verify. That gives your team a clearer answer about time saved, and gives us more useful feedback than the generation time alone.

The technical designer or production owner still needs to approve the details before handoff.

Thanks for showing the whole process

Laura's walkthrough gave us specific things to investigate and a better view of the work involved in reviewing a generated pack. I appreciate her taking the time to show it.

Our goal is to make preparing, checking and editing a tech pack quicker and easier. A review like this helps us see where we're doing that and where we're creating extra work.
