We Made a Dress with AI Tech Packs. Here’s How It Turned Out.
Garment 01: the black asymmetrical dress
We’ve just released the first video in a series where we design a garment, make the tech pack, have a factory produce a sample, and shoot the finished piece on a model.
For the first one, we made a black strapless dress with a ruched bodice, asymmetric ruffles and a fabric rosette.
The idea is to share the whole project. You can watch how we made it, look through the final tech pack, open the pattern file, and compare the original design with the dress we ended up with.

Starting with the design
We started by looking at fashion references and the silhouettes and details that kept coming up. Our designer then developed the dress around a fitted strapless shape, gathering through the bodice, and ruffles that fall below the short skirt.
There’s quite a bit going on in this dress. The ruching, the uneven hem and the flower all need to work together. Once we had the design, we needed to explain those details clearly enough for the factory to make it.

The original front design.

The original back design.
Making the tech pack
We used AI Tech Packs to draft the front and back technical views, measurements, materials, trims and construction details.
Our designer then went through the draft against the original design. That included checking the bodice, the shape of the ruffle, where the rosette would sit, and the invisible zipper at the back. She made corrections and reviewed the information before we sent it to the factory.
That review is part of the process. The AI gives us a starting point, and the designer makes the decisions about what the factory should receive.
We’re sharing the final PDF with this post so you can see the actual document for the dress. It includes the construction notes, bill of materials, front and back flat sketches, and measurements for the size S sample.
Getting the sample made
The factory took it from there, starting with the pattern and working through the fabric’s stretch and drape before cutting and sewing.
The video shows the bodice being gathered, the ruffle coming together, the zipper going in, and the rosette being shaped and attached. This is where you start to see how the details in the design work in fabric.
The tech pack gave the designer, pattern maker and sewing team a shared reference throughout that process.
The finished dress
When the sample came back, we checked it against the design and tech pack. We looked at how the strapless top sat, how the ruching was distributed, the balance of the ruffles, the zipper and the position of the flower.
Then we put it on a model and photographed it.

Having the design image and the finished photos next to each other lets you make your own comparison. You can see how the proportions carried through and how the fabric hangs once someone is wearing it.
The files from this project
Everything below belongs to this dress:
- Watch the process video
- View the final tech pack — PDF
- Open the pattern file — HPGL
- View the front design image — PNG
- View the back design image — PNG
- See the model photos
These are the files for our sample. If you use them as a starting point for your own garment, go through the measurements, pattern and construction with your pattern maker before sampling.
What we’re making next
We’re going to keep doing this with more garments. Each release will have its own video, post, pattern, tech pack and photos.
You can find every release in Made with AI Tech Packs. We’ll keep adding the pieces we make, with the video and files for each one.
